“I pledge not to vote for any candidate that wants to put me in jail, even for a short time.”

This was a lot more compelling than I anticipated. I used to be kind of obsessed with The Hills, but today I wouldn’t even have bothered reading an article about Speidi if Choire Sicha hadn’t recommended it so emphatically. And I actually find it sort of inspirational that such a sympathetic portrait of such unsympathetic characters can exist. It would have been amazing if Adam DiVello had commented, though, like seriously, my dream come true.

(I am 100% certain that, given the opportunity, I could produce reality shows that would elevate the genre. But I don’t want to move to Los Angeles. If I ever do find my way into the appropriate meeting for that sort of thing, though, I have so many brilliant pitches. I’m pretty sure I could turn Heidi and Spencer into consistently entertaining and sympathetic protagonists, and coax an audience into empathizing with them.)

Snooki is really beautiful and looks quite like Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. She has the same bone structure. I’m kind of obsessed with Jersey Shore. People don’t give them enough credit for how entertaining they are. I think reality television is such a special talent… The characters fulfill some sort of mythological purpose, a lot like Star Wars. You have this silent, deadly man-eater, J-WOWW, who’s very powerful in her silence. And then there’s your homegirl, Snooki. She gets left out and overlooked, like the kid sister. And then you have the ingenue, Sammi. So you have these archetypes. It’s like a Greek myth. Somebody should do a dissertation on it. You wish Joseph Campbell were alive so he could deconstruct it for us. Ronnie, he’s the lover, the Romeo … It’s very Shakespearean, as well. There’s a purpose to all of the characters, but I know that The Situation is kind of like Icarus. He’s going to fly too close to the sun and his abs are going to get burnt. It deserves some sort of Camille Paglia treatment.
